The well-respected chairperson of the Ivory Park Taxi Association, Buti Johannes Mkonza, has passed away in hospital following a brief illness. Known for his visionary leadership, Mkonza was celebrated as a champion of economic empowerment within the taxi industry.

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) confirmed his passing in a statement from President Mothlabane Abnar Tsebe. Mkonza, a prominent figure in the taxi industry and the founder of BJM Coaches, died on Sunday, November 3, at Mediclinic Midstream Hospital at the age of 55. He was also a former chairperson of Santaco in Gauteng.

“The South African National Taxi Council is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our esteemed former chairperson, Buti Johannes Mkonza. The taxi industry has lost a remarkable leader, pioneer, and hero. Mkonza’s visionary leadership, mentorship, and selflessness have left an indelible mark on our industry. We are devastated by the loss of our beloved leader and colleague,” said Tsebe.

A memorial service for Mkonza will be held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Halfway House on November 7 at 12:00 p.m.

Mkonza’s journey in the taxi industry began with a single taxi, which grew into BJM Coaches, a company with a fleet that now includes 80 buses and 30 mini-taxis. He also owned several filling stations across the province.
